Building risk functions that get listened to, not just complied with.
Overview
There's risk culture, and there's risk theatre. Risk theatre is committees that meet, papers that get noted, and controls that exist on paper but that nobody actually owns. Risk culture is when the people closest to a decision are also accountable for its consequences. Most institutions have more of the former than they realise, and our diagnostic work is built to surface the difference plainly.
We're deliberate about sequencing remediation by what would genuinely fail first under pressure, rather than by what's easiest to fix — a distinction that's uncomfortable in a planning meeting and considerably less uncomfortable during an actual incident.
Establish the real risk picture, not the one the last audit signed off on.
Identify which controls are genuinely owned, and which exist only on paper.
Rank remediation by what would actually fail first, not by ease of fixing.
Rebuild ownership and controls in the sequence that reduces exposure fastest.
Embed reporting that a committee will actually use to make decisions.
