March 2025 — Alden Advisory
The EU AI Act's phased implementation continues to raise practical questions for financial services firms operating across UK and EU markets, particularly around which AI-assisted decision processes fall within higher-risk classification categories.
For UK firms with EU operations or EU clients, the near-term priority is a clear-eyed inventory of where AI genuinely assists a decision with consequences for a customer or counterparty, rather than a broad, undifferentiated audit of every system that happens to use machine learning.
Our regulatory strategy team is advising clients to build this inventory now, ahead of firmer implementation guidance — the firms that will adapt fastest are the ones with an accurate map of their own AI-assisted decisions already in hand when specific requirements crystallise.
This briefing reflects Alden Advisory's general commentary on a developing regulatory topic and is not legal or regulatory advice. Firms should seek specific guidance for their own circumstances.
