Eleanor Whitfield
Managing Partner, International Arbitration
Biography
Eleanor Whitfield trained in Paris before joining Mercer & Stone in 1998 to build what was then a single-partner arbitration department. She has led the practice to a Band 1 Chambers UK ranking and a three-year run in the GAR 30.
She acts in both investment treaty and institutional commercial arbitration, and secured a substantial award for an energy sector client following a sovereign state's expropriation of a long-term concession. Chambers UK individually ranks her as a “Star Individual.”
Philosophy
"What do clients misunderstand about arbitration?"
That it's simply litigation with more privacy. The seat, the rules and the tribunal you agree to are decisions that shape the outcome as much as the merits — and clients often delegate those choices too quickly, long before any dispute exists.
